Submit Information about your Jail Garden to KACO

Posted by Ed Prindle on Monday, July 30, 2012 in Association News

We would like to prepare an article for KACo’s COUNTY LINE magazine about work farms at Kentucky’s county detention centers.  We would like to know how many jailers are operating a vegetable garden to help offset the cost of purchasing food at their jail.  This article would serve to spotlight your hard work and how you try to offset your costs.

Many of you were previously contacted by former Deputy Commissioner Rodney Ballard, and he was kind enough to forward those replies to us. However, since that information was collected in February with 2012 data, we would appreciate updating this info.

We would like to know:

·         How many acres do you farm?

·         What crops are you planting/harvesting?

·         How much money did you save your county?

·         What did you do with the surplus?

Any additional comments about your work farm program – benefits to the inmates, to the county, to the community – would be greatly appreciated!

If you have any questions, please contact me at this cathy.hancock@kaco.org , or give me a call at 800-264-5226.  Thank you for your time and cooperation.
